Part Time Help Wanted

Shop Rat

Interesting part time job opportunity for a young student, or retired auto technician (tired of puttering around the house) who loves old cars and is into drag racing. Some of the details that I am looking to impress upon a candidate are:

* Minimum 24 hours a week, maximum 30 hours a week.
* While the schedule can be flexible to work around another job or school -- it will be scheduled time.
* Honesty and dependability are musts -- and references will be checked.
* Can work in Saturdays and/or Sundays some of the time, when not out of town racing.
* Candidate must be handy, and very familiar with cars. The more experience working on cars, the better chance of getting the job, and the better chance of quick advancement to more important duties and higher pay.
* Must be a self-starter, self-motivator, and be able to work alone. Often the Shop Rat will be the only one in the shop and as such we need someone who will give an honest day's work for an honest wage. Amount and quality of output will be the determining factor. Patience for free loaders will very short.
* Must have dependable transportation. We depend on you being at work when you are scheduled to be at work.
* Must be a quick learner. We will work with you to show you how to perform duties from routine inspections and adjustments to remove and replace engines. It is up to you to pay attention and quickly catch on. The more capable you become working on these cars, the more valuable you become to us, the more important and complex duties you will be assigned, and the more money you will ultimately earn. Your honesty, loyalty, dependability, and competence determines your future with us.

The actual tasks are varied with a balance of the interesting and the not so interesting. They are split between shop maintenance and race car maintenance. You will not get bored and you will learn as much about running a race shop as you show the interest and capability of. Just a few of the duties include:

* Routine maintenance such as oil changes, rotating slicks, checking suspension and drive train fasteners for tightness.
* Cleaning the vehicles, including the underside.
* Keeping the shop clean.
* Replacing, or assist in the replacing of race car components.
* Loading, or the assisting of loading the cars in the transporter.
* Advanced race car maintenance as you prove yourself capable.

Extra Benefits:

* The shop rat who excels (and has a compatible personality - after all these are long weekends) will be given the opportunity to travel to races with us if he/she wishes (expenses paid) and learn to crew chief the cars.
* There could be an opportunity for us to reward the shop rat -- who goes above and beyond the call of duty -- with getting some instruction and seat time in our back up race cars.
* Those who meet or exceed our expectation can earn the benefit of a space in the shop to work on and store their race car, and a parking area for their trailer.
* There could be the opportunity for the right person to learn how to drive the transporter.

The pay starts at $8 an hour for the first six months (no exceptions) -- after which time we will sit down and discuss pay and number of hours based on performance. This can easily work into a full time position as the Shop Foreman/Crew Chief, with an apprentice as the new shop rat to you. This is a job for someone wanting exposure of learning to work in a race shop, accepts direction, has a strong back, is dependable and honest. All others need not apply. This is not the job for free loaders, flakes, criminals or stubborn old men.
